The Footballers With the Most Club Appearances

Fifty years of football produces a lot of games. The players who have taken the pitch the most times form a who's who of durability, from a Brazilian goalkeeper who now holds the world record to the one-club legends of European football.

Goals win headlines, but appearances are the true currency of longevity. To reach a thousand professional games a player must stay fit, stay selected and stay relevant for two decades, surviving every new signing the club makes in his position. That is why the all-time appearance record is one of the most respected numbers in the game.

The New All-Time Record: Fábio

In October 2025, Brazilian goalkeeper Fábio passed a milestone that had stood for decades. Fábio, who has spent his entire career in Brazil with Cruzeiro and then Fluminense, reached 1,433 official matches, overtaking the previous all-time record set by England legend Peter Shilton. At 44 years old, he is still playing and still extending the record with every match.

Shilton's total of 1,387 official career matches had been considered unbreakable, because it combined a three-decade career with an extraordinary run of domestic cup and league appearances. Fábio's longevity — goalkeeper, remarkably durable, consistently first choice — has now written him into the record books.

Rogerio Ceni: The Single-Club Record

While Fábio owns the overall record, the most appearances for a single club belongs to another Brazilian goalkeeper. Rogerio Ceni made more than 1,200 official appearances for São Paulo between 1990 and 2015 — the most any player has ever played for one team. He also scored 128 career goals, making him the highest-scoring goalkeeper in football history, a combination of records that will likely never be repeated.

The All-Time Top Club Appearance Makers

Different sources count official matches slightly differently — some include friendly internationals and cup replays, others do not. Using the widely cited official-match figures, the all-time list looks like this:

What matters is the pattern: the all-time list is dominated by goalkeepers, defenders and central midfielders — positions where a top player can still perform into their late thirties.

Why Goalkeepers Dominate the Record

Look at the two records above and one fact stands out: the all-time appearance leader and the single-club appearance leader are both goalkeepers. The reasons are obvious.

• Goalkeepers suffer far fewer muscle injuries and almost no joint wear from sprinting.
• They do not get dropped for form as often as outfield players.
• A goalkeeper's prime runs from 25 to 35, and many play on far beyond that.

Can Anyone Ever Catch Fábio?

To break 1,433 appearances, a player starting at 18 would need to average more than 50 matches a season for 27 years. Modern football's heavier workload makes that harder, not easier. The chances are that the next record-holder is currently a goalkeeper, in his teens, who nobody has heard of yet.
