Some matches are just fixtures. Others are events that stop a city, divide a country and define a season. These are the most famous football derbies on Earth.

In football, a derby is more than a game between local rivals. It is identity, history and grievance condensed into ninety minutes. Across the world, a handful of derbies have outgrown their cities entirely, drawing global audiences and producing some of the most intense atmospheres the sport can create.

El Clásico: Real Madrid vs Barcelona

The most watched club fixture in the world pits Real Madrid against Barcelona. It is far more than a football match: for decades it has carried political and cultural weight, with Barcelona seen as the symbol of Catalonia against the capital's establishment club. With over 250 official meetings, both clubs have produced the two greatest rivalries in modern football history — and the two greatest players of the era, Messi and Ronaldo, defined the fixture for a decade.

The Old Firm: Celtic vs Rangers

Glasgow's Old Firm is the most intense derby in the British Isles, and one of the most watched in the world. The clubs' rivalry began with the very first meeting on 28 May 1888, and it has always carried more than sport — religion, politics and history all feed into it. The term 'Old Firm' dates from 1904, coined for the money-spinning matches between the two Glasgow giants. Between them they have won virtually every Scottish title since the 1890s, and their meetings still stop the country.

The Superclásico: Boca Juniors vs River Plate

In Argentina, the Superclásico between Buenos Aires rivals Boca Juniors and River Plate is routinely described as the most ferocious derby in world football. The two clubs share the same city but represent opposing sides of the divide: Boca historically the club of the working-class south, River the more affluent north. Their matches are famous for flares, tifo, noise and the most intense man-marking in the sport. The Superclásico has been named by many publications the greatest derby on Earth.

The Milan Derby: Inter vs AC Milan

Italy's Derby della Madonnina — named for the statue of the Virgin Mary atop Milan Cathedral — is one of Europe's most storied fixtures. Inter and AC Milan share the San Siro, which means the derby is decided in the same stadium twice a year. The two clubs have combined for dozens of Serie A titles and European Cups, and the derby has featured the likes of Maldini, Baresi, Ronaldo (the Brazilian) and Ibrahimović.

The English Derbies

England has a rich collection of its own. The Merseyside derby between Liverpool and Everton is the longest continuously played top-flight derby in the country, first played in 1894 and famous for its intensity despite the clubs' shared city. The North London derby between Arsenal and Tottenham, and the Manchester derby between United and City — transformed since City's takeover into a genuine title rivalry — complete the modern English landscape. The Steel City derby between Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday is the oldest of them all, first played in the 1890s.

Europe's Other Great Derbies

Across Europe, three more derbies deserve a place in the top tier:

• Der Klassiker — Bayern Munich vs Borussia Dortmund, the modern Bundesliga's defining rivalry.
• Derby d'Italia — Juventus vs Inter, the two most successful Italian clubs.
• De Klassieker — Ajax vs Feyenoord, the Netherlands' biggest fixture.
