The Oldest Football Competition in the World

Every tournament in the world traces back to one: the FA Cup, created in 1871. Here is the story of football's oldest competition — and the trophies and leagues that followed it.

Before there were Champions Leagues, World Cups or domestic super leagues, there was a simple idea: gather a group of clubs, knock them out over several rounds, and give a trophy to the last one standing. That idea was born in England in 1871, and the competition it created — the FA Cup — has never stopped running since.

The FA Cup: The First Ever

The Football Association launched its cup competition in the 1871-72 season, just eight years after the FA itself was founded. Fifteen clubs entered. The final was played at Kennington Oval in London, where the Wanderers — a team of former public-school players — beat the Royal Engineers 1-0. The only goal of the match was scored by Morton Betts, playing under the pseudonym 'A.H. Chequer'.

That first trophy, known as the 'little tin idol', was 45 centimetres tall, cost around £20, and was stolen from a Birmingham shop window in 1895 and never recovered. The FA Cup that is lifted today is a modern replica of its 1911 replacement, but the competition itself has run continuously for more than 150 years — the oldest national football competition in the world.

The Trophy That Predates It: The Youdan Cup

Strictly speaking, a trophy was awarded for football earlier. The Youdan Cup was contested in 1867 in Sheffield and is considered the first trophy ever played for in football history. But it was played under the Sheffield rules, a separate code of football that predated the FA's Laws of the Game, so it is not counted as an 'association football' competition. That honour belongs to the FA Cup.

The Oldest Trophy: The Scottish Cup

If you measure by the trophy itself rather than the competition, the answer changes. The Scottish Cup was first contested in 1873-74, and the original trophy — a silver vase — is the oldest association football trophy in existence, having been presented to the winners in 1874. Scotland's competition is therefore the second-oldest national cup and the holder of the oldest surviving piece of silverware.

The World's First League: The Football League

A cup is one thing; a league is another. The world's first football league was founded on 17 April 1888 at the Royal Hotel in Manchester, the brainchild of Aston Villa director William McGregor. Twelve clubs from the Midlands and the north of England signed up, and the first season began on 8 September 1888.

Preston North End won that inaugural title without losing a single match — earning the nickname 'The Invincibles' — and went on to complete the first-ever League and FA Cup double in 1888-89. The Football League's founding is why England is credited with creating not just the game's rules but its structure: every professional league in the world is a descendant of that 1888 format.

The Oldest International-Style Cups

Other countries followed quickly. The Copa del Rey, Spain's national cup, was founded in 1903 and is among the oldest national competitions outside Britain, with Athletic Bilbao its first winners. The Copa America began in 1916, and the World Cup itself arrived in 1930 in Uruguay — all of them descendants of the template the FA Cup set in 1871.
