No modern pair defined their era like the Toure brothers from Ivory Coast. Kolo Toure was the bedrock of Arsenal's famous 'Invincibles' back line in 2003-04, then won more silverware at Manchester City. Yaya Toure was the dominant box-to-box midfielder of the 2010s, winning three Premier League titles, an FA Cup and the Champions League with Barcelona, and being named African Footballer of the Year four times. Together they anchored the Ivory Coast team for a decade.
Bobby and Jack Charlton
England's 1966 World Cup winners featured two brothers: Bobby Charlton, the free-scoring midfield genius of Manchester United, and Jack Charlton, the towering centre-back. They remain the only brothers to start and win a World Cup final for England. Their paths could hardly have differed more — Bobby was the silky attacker, Jack the rugged defender — but the medal was shared.
Michael and Brian Laudrup
Denmark's Euro 1992 fairy tale was powered by two brothers. Michael Laudrup was one of the most gifted playmakers of the 1980s and 90s, winning La Liga with Barcelona and Real Madrid. Brian Laudrup was the electrifying winger who scored in the 1992 final against Germany and won the Champions League with Rangers' rivals AC Milan. Their father Finn had also played for Denmark, making the Laudrups a genuine dynasty.
Ronald and Erwin Koeman
Netherlands' Euro 1988 winners included two Koeman brothers. Ronald Koeman — who later managed Barcelona — was the free-kick specialist whose goals included the famous penalty that beat West Germany in the semi-final, while Erwin Koeman was a tenacious midfielder. Ronald's trophy haul stretched from PSV to Barcelona, including the 1992 European Cup.
Gary and Phil Neville
The Neville brothers were the perfect example of academy loyalty. Both came through Manchester United's youth system, won the treble in 1999, and won a combined 19 Premier League titles. Gary was the relentless right-back and later captain; Phil played both full-back and midfield. Together they won more than almost any sibling pairing in English football.
Eden and Thorgan Hazard
Belgium's golden generation featured the Hazard brothers. Eden Hazard was the Premier League's most feared dribbler at Chelsea, twice winning the title, while Thorgan Hazard built a fine career in the Bundesliga at Borussia Monchengladbach and later at Dortmund. A third brother, Kylian, also played professionally. They formed the spine of Belgium's second-ranked national team of the late 2010s.
Lucas and Theo Hernandez
The Hernandez brothers from France each won football's biggest prize. Lucas Hernandez won the 2018 World Cup with France and the Champions League with Bayern Munich. His younger brother Theo Hernandez has been AC Milan's attacking left-back since 2019, and starred for France at the 2022 World Cup. It is rare for two brothers from the same family to reach the top of the European game, let alone the World Cup final.
The Boateng Brothers and the Williams Siblings
Two more modern pairs deserve a mention. Kevin-Prince and Jerome Boateng are half-brothers who played on opposite international sides: Kevin-Prince for Ghana, Jerome for Germany, where he won the 2014 World Cup. And the Williams brothers, Iñaki and Nico, starred for Spain at Euro 2024, with Nico scoring in the final as Spain won the title.
