Famous Father-and-Son Footballers

Some footballers become their father's legacy. These famous father-and-son pairs both reached the professional game — and several both won major trophies.

Famous father-and-son footballers in history

Handing a shirt down from father to son is one of football's most romantic stories. The names are familiar to fans of several generations: a surname heard in the terraces as a legend, then heard again twenty years later for his son. These are the most famous father-and-son footballers in the history of the game.

Cesare and Paolo Maldini

The ultimate father-son story belongs to AC Milan. Cesare Maldini captained Milan and won the 1963 European Cup, then became a respected coach and Italy manager. His son Paolo Maldini went further, spending his entire 24-year career at Milan, winning five European Cups and seven Serie A titles, and captaining Italy at the 1994 World Cup final. No family name is more woven into a single club.

Peter and Kasper Schmeichel

Football's only father-son Premier League-winning goalkeepers. Peter Schmeichel won five Premier League titles with Manchester United and the 1999 treble. His son Kasper Schmeichel followed a far harder road — released from Manchester City, rebuilt at Notts County and Leeds — before winning the Premier League with Leicester City in 2016 and the FA Cup in 2021, plus the Euro 2020 run to the semi-finals with Denmark.

Frank Lampard Senior and Junior

Frank Lampard Sr won two FA Cups and 552 appearances for West Ham. His son Frank Lampard Jr became Chelsea's all-time top scorer with 211 goals, won three Premier League titles and the 2012 Champions League, and holds the Premier League record for goals from midfield. Theirs is a rare case where the son was even better than the father.

Johan and Jordi Cruyff

Johan Cruyff reinvented football as a player and coach, winning three European Cups and three Ballons d'Or. His son Jordi Cruyff was a fine winger in his own right, playing for Barcelona and Manchester United and winning Euro 1996 qualification-era caps for the Netherlands. Jordi later followed his father into management and worked at Barcelona and as a national team coach.

Gheorghe and Ianis Hagi

Gheorghe Hagi, the 'Maradona of the Carpathians', is Romania's greatest-ever player. His son Ianis Hagi became a professional and represented Romania, following his father's footsteps. It is a rare international father-son pairing, with Ianis playing alongside the national record-holder who shares his name.

George and Timothy Weah

George Weah was the first African footballer to win the Ballon d'Or and later became president of Liberia. His son Timothy Weah chose to play for the United States, won Ligue 1 with Lille, and started for the USMNT at the 2022 World Cup. A Ballon d'Or-winning father and a World Cup son — few families come close.

Alfie and Erling Haaland

Alfie Haaland played for Leeds, Nottingham Forest and Manchester City in the Premier League. His son Erling Haaland has rewritten the goalscoring record books — 36 Premier League goals in his debut season, and a 2023 treble with Manchester City. Father and son both played at Elland Road and for Norway, and Erling has often credited Alfie's coaching for his finishing.

Diego and Giovanni Simeone

Atletico Madrid's long-time manager Diego Simeone was one of Argentina's great midfielders. His eldest son Giovanni Simeone became a Serie A striker of note, scoring regularly for several Italian clubs and winning caps for Argentina. The Simeone name now spans two generations of the professional game.

The rarest record: Only the Schmeichels have both won the Premier League. Only the Maldinis have captained the same club to a European Cup. Father-son footballers are common; father-son winners are precious.

The 2026 World Cup added a fresh chapter to the story, with several sons of former internationals competing on the biggest stage. For the details, see our breakdown of father-son players at the 2026 World Cup.
